About SewerJew

What is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the miracle of the oil. It is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar.

History of Hanukkah

The story of Hanukkah dates back to the second century BCE when the Maccabees fought against the Greek-Syrian rulers. They reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem and re-dedicated it to the Jewish God.

Traditions and Customs

One of the most popular traditions of Hanukkah is the lighting of the menorah. Families light one candle on the menorah each night for eight nights. Other customs include playing dreidel and eating foods fried in oil.
